Hitchbay — sell your motorhome or caravan, keep it at home

Motorhome vs Caravan: Which Is Right For You?

The practical differences in cost, licensing, flexibility and storage, to help you decide which type of leisure vehicle suits how you actually travel.

Both get you off-grid in your own bed with your own kitchen. How you actually use one day to day is where the real differences show up.

Driving and licensing

A motorhome is a single self-propelled vehicle — you drive it, park it, and that's it. A caravan is towed behind a separate car, which means you need a tow car capable of (and legally rated for) the caravan's weight, and if you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, your licence's towing entitlement may limit what combination of car and caravan you can legally tow without an additional test.

Using it once you arrive

This is the biggest practical difference. Tow a caravan to a site, unhitch it, and your car is free to use for day trips. Take a motorhome, and the whole vehicle is parked up unless you've also brought a bike, a scooter, or a car on a trailer. Some owners tow a small car behind their motorhome for exactly this reason.

Cost and running

Caravans are generally cheaper to buy than an equivalent-age, equivalent-quality motorhome, since you're not paying for a chassis, engine and cab as well as the living area. Running costs differ too — a motorhome needs its own MOT, road tax and servicing as a vehicle in addition to habitation servicing, while a caravan only needs the habitation side and is taxed and tested via the towing car instead.

Storage

Neither is small, but a caravan can usually be unhitched and left on a driveway more easily than a motorhome, which is a full-sized vehicle end to end. Many owners of both types end up using secure storage sites regardless, particularly where home storage isn't allowed by local covenant.
